Sírásó verseny Nyergesújfalun, a versenyzők munka közben

There is a profession we rarely talk about. A job many people would rather avoid, yet one that is needed every day: the work of gravediggers.

On 5 September, we visited Nyergesújfalu as spectators at the 9th MTFE Gravedigger Competition, a respected professional event organized by the Hungarian Association of Cemetery Maintenance and Operators. The competition took place at the New Public Cemetery in Nyergesújfalu, where 19 two-person teams—a total of 38 competitors—tested their professional skills, speed, and precision.

Watching as spectators gave us a completely different perspective on this work.

We saw how much physical strength, perseverance, precision, and professional knowledge it takes to do this job properly. We saw the shovels, the pickaxes, and the hard work in the earth. Perhaps even more important was seeing the discipline and care with which the competitors worked.

And it made us think of something we should probably talk about much more.

A gravedigger does more than dig.

While families say their goodbyes, there are people quietly doing the work entrusted to them in the background.

The work is physically demanding. Gravediggers work with soil and all kinds of weather: mud, cold, heat, and difficult conditions. Alongside the physical strain, there is an emotional burden: day after day, they encounter death, loss, tears, and the pain of grieving families.

Much of this work is quiet. Often unseen. And still indispensable.

That is why it matters to look at this profession differently. It is important, necessary, and dignified work. The people who do it help us say goodbye to someone we love with dignity at one of life’s hardest moments.

Some work is rarely talked about, yet is indispensable. Some people are there for others on their hardest days.

Let’s appreciate gravediggers and respect their work!

Congratulations to all the competitors!
