What to Know When Someone Dies
Losing a loved one is a difficult time. It can be hard to navigate the tasks, decisions and official arrangements. This guide offers clear, straightforward help with the most important questions.
Notify a doctor, who will issue the medical certificate of death. Then contact a funeral director to begin arranging the funeral. If you are unsure, our team can help you through every step. You can call us at any time of day.
Coffin burial: a traditional funeral in which the deceased is laid to rest in a coffin in a grave.
Cremation: following cremation, the ashes are placed in an urn in a grave or urn niche, or scattered as part of a scattering ceremony.
You will need the medical certificate of death, the deceased’s personal documents (identity card and address card), and any written funeral instructions, if available. The person arranging the funeral should also bring their own personal documents.
A coffin burial usually takes place within 3–7 days, and a funeral following cremation within 7–14 days. The exact date also depends on the availability of the cemetery and the officiant.
The cost depends on the type of funeral, the coffin or urn, the ceremony and the burial plot. We provide an individual quotation in every case, with no hidden costs.
You can choose a religious ceremony led by a priest or minister, or a civil ceremony led by a funeral celebrant.
